Hemp Dogbane
Scientific Name: Apocynum cannabinum L.
Other Names: Indian hemp.
Life Cycle: perennial
General Description: Erect perennial with large, ovate, and opposite leaves.
Seedlings: Cotyledons
are round, oval, and thick. Young leaves are opposite and smooth.
Hypocotyl is usually purple. Cotyledons are rare since plants usually
emerge from rhizomes.
True Leaves and Stem: Leaves
are opposite and ovate with a pointed tip. Plants are more branched in
upper third and may exude a milky juice when injured. Leaves are smaller
than that of common milkweed.
Roots: White, fleshy roots and rhizomes.
Flower and Fruit: Greenish-white tubular flowers are found in clusters at the end of the stems.
